An audit does not have to be formal to be useful. Use the same checklist for every supplier so that your comparison is fair.
Hygiene and facility
- clean production areas, controlled access and pest control records
- staff hygiene practices and training records
- separation of raw and finished goods
Traceability and recalls
- can the factory trace a finished carton back to ingredient batches?
- is there a written recall procedure and a recent mock recall?
Allergens
- allergen map of the site and cleaning between products
- clear labelling of milk, nuts, peanuts, gluten and others
Halal and certificates
- halal policy and certificate, matching the factory that will make your order; see the halal checklist
- valid food safety certificates; see food safety certificates explained
Packaging and storage
- packaging suppliers and material approvals
- warehouse temperature and humidity control
- loading practice for hot destinations
Remote audit option
Ask for a live video tour, recent audit reports and sample documents when a visit is not possible. Then confirm with sample orders.
