Importing Chocolate and Wafers into Ghana: FDA, Labels and Tema Port

Ghana is a cocoa-producing country, yet imported confectionery sells well in its shops and supermarkets. This guide shows how an importer in Accra, Kumasi or Tema prepares an order of Turkish chocolate and wafers.

Packaged food in Ghana falls under the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA Ghana), and procedures change from time to time. Use this as a planning guide and confirm current requirements with the FDA or your clearing agent.

Product approval

Imported pre-packaged food normally needs approval or registration before sale. Ask the manufacturer early for specifications, ingredients, allergen information and sample labels.

Labels

Labels are in English with product name, ingredients, allergens, net weight, dates, batch, origin and importer information. The manufacturer prints them at the factory, so send the wording before production.

Shelf life, heat and Tema

Goods usually arrive at Tema port in a hot, humid climate. Plan dates and storage using shelf life of imported chocolate and shipping to hot climates.

Where it sells

Typical channels are wholesalers, provision shops, supermarkets, school and office kiosks and petrol-station shops. Choose pack sizes and price points to match; see pack formats.
