Shelf Life of Imported Chocolate: Why Remaining Shelf Life Matters
A chocolate product can be perfectly fresh when it leaves the factory and still be refused because too much of its shelf life is gone on arrival. This guide explains how to plan around it.

Many importing authorities and retail chains ask for a minimum share of the shelf life to remain when goods arrive or are inspected. The exact rule differs by country and sometimes by retailer, so ask your authority and your buyers in writing.
Where the days go
Shelf life starts at production, not at shipment. Before the goods reach a shelf, days are used by:
- waiting for the shipping slot
- sea transit and transshipment
- port dwell, inspection and clearance
- transport to your warehouse and to the shop
How to plan backwards
- Ask the authority and your biggest customer for the minimum shelf life they accept.
- Add realistic transit, port and delivery times, including a margin for delays.
- Tell the manufacturer your latest acceptable production date so that production is planned to fit.
- Order quantities you can sell within the remaining window.
Protect quality, not just dates
Heat and humidity shorten the usable life of chocolate even when the date is far away. Follow the guidance in shipping to hot climates, and keep stock cool and dry.
Rotate stock
Sell the oldest stock first, and set a rule for when near-date stock is moved to discount channels before it expires.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the shelf life of chocolate and wafers?
It depends on the product, the pack and the recipe, and it is printed on the pack. Ask your supplier for the stated shelf life of each item.
Who is responsible if goods arrive with too little shelf life?
It depends on the contract. Define the minimum remaining shelf life in the order and the Incoterm; see Incoterms explained.
Can the manufacturer produce to order for a long route?
Often yes. Share the destination and timeline when you ask for a quote on the contact page.
